This wheelchair was used at the Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Homer G. Phillips Hospital operated from 1937 to 1979 in the historically African American Ville section of north St. Louis City. At a time when facilities for African Americans lagged behind those for whites, it was an outstanding hospital and training facility. It was named for an African American attorney who championed the bond issue to build the hospital.
